Playing for Keeps Tour - Interview, Excerpt & Giveaway

Hey Everyone! Today I have a stop on the Playing for Keeps Tour. I have an interview with Cynthia Owens and a giveaway for you all.

BLURB:

He fled life in the shadows for a life in the limelight

Never as dutiful as his older brother, Lucas Davenport was a thinker, a dreamer of dreams. When tragedy overtook his family, he fled to the bright lights of the stage. Can he make the Shannon Theatre Troupe a success – or is he doomed to once again be “the other son?”

She sought the past she barely remembered.

Mary Kathryn O’Brien returns to the genteel world her mother left behind – but can Irish Katie ever truly hope to belong? Or will old wounds and new rivalries destroy the threads of family forever?

Lucas and Katie must battle prejudice and buried secrets before they can learn to trust each other. Is their love just a brief intermission, or are they Playing For Keeps?

Excerpt
Philadelphia, 1850
Luke stared in silent horror as glowing red flames devoured the warehouse.
What have you done this time?
The words resounded through Luke’s brain, condemning and inevitable, in his father’s disapproving tones.
What had he done? He’d secured the warehouses. He had, he was sure of it. He’d made certain all the forges were out.
Hadn’t he? Or had his head been too full of the play he’d been studying in secret, the characters he was determined to flesh out, the pages he’d obsessively filled with his own dreams and interpretations?
Clanging bells and pounding hooves hammered in his ears.
Thank you, God.
But as quickly as relief flared, terror chased close on its heels.
Dear God, was anyone still inside? Tobias, his father’s most trusted clerk—surely he’d left long ago. And the two young men Matt hired last month—hadn’t they spoken of going to The Dancing Horse to spend their first pay packets?
He struggled for breath, the acrid smell of burning wood and molten steel tearing at his throat.

Bleak realization swept through him. It was his fault. It had to be. But it was an accident…

Matthew. Matt would take care of everything. Matt always cleaned up his little brother’s messes, covered up Luke’s many shortcomings.

“Mr. Lucas? Mr. Lucas!”

Dazed, Luke stared in disbelief at the normally impeccable clerk. Tobias had lost his coat, his once pristine white linen shirt was torn and covered with soot. Luke’s gut clenched as he took in the other man’s wild hair, the bloody gash slashed cruelly across one cheek.

“Mr. Lucas!”

Luke grabbed Tobias’s arm, his head thudding, his fingers gripping convulsively. Fear struck ice cold in his heart. His entire body shaking, he ran his dry tongue over his ash-covered lips.

“Tobias, where’s Matt?”

The clerk gazed at Luke, pity darkening his eyes. Tears trailed slowly down his soot-blackened face.

“Mr. Matthew’s dead, sir.”

Interview
Tell me about your book(s). How did you come up with that (story, angle, idea)?
Playing For Keeps is Book III of my Claddagh Series. It started in post-Famine Ireland with In Sunshine or in Shadow, when Rory O'Brien returned to the village of his birth to become landlord where he was once a penniless tenant. While I was writing the book, I realized that Rory's young daughter, Katie O'Brien had to have her own story. Of course, I had to wait until she grew up enough to visit her mother's family in Baltimore. And in between there was Coming Home, Ashleen O'Brien's story.

I've always loved the theater and Shakespeare, and so did Katie, so I made her hero an actor. Of course, Lucas is much more than “a mere player,” but you'll have to read the book to find out just how much more!

How did you get interested in writing this particular genre?
I love history, and I've love Ireland and everything Irish since I was a child. So when I decided to write a book, it was natural that I'd choose to write something I loved. It enabled me to put the people I loved into historical settings. I was able to incorporate all the sadness and loss of the Great Hunger, as well as all the hope and joy that personify the Irish people, both here and abroad.

What's a typical working day like for you? When and where do you write? Do you set a daily writing goal?
I used to write in my office, which is located in the basement of my house. Then my husband bought me a laptop a year ago, and I discovered the delights of working wherever I wanted/needed to. Now you can often find me writing at my dining room table, and in good weather, I move outside to my gazebo, which is screened to keep the bugs out.

I don't really have a “typical” writing day, though I do tend to write new material in the mornings, when I find I'm most creative. But if the ideas occur to me at night, well, I'll be tapping away at my keyboard then, too. I try to write 1,000 words every day, sometimes 1,500 if I'm feeling really inspired. I consider anything over 1,000 words icing on the cake.

What is the hardest part of writing for you?
Probably the editing process. When I'm writing, the ideas just flow and it seems I'm always racing to get them down on paper - or on the computer screen. I'm constantly thinking about the story, and I just can't wait to write it down, but I don't always worry about it being perfect. I have a little sticky-note on my desk that says, “It's only a first draft!” But once that first draft is finished, I have to put it all together in logical sequence, making sure the dialogue sounds right, that I'm “showing” the story, rather than telling it, and that my heroine has the same color hair and eyes at the beginning as at the middle and the end! It's a long process, and sometimes a painstaking one.

What kind of research did you do for this book?
I had to do a lot of “different” research for Playing For Keeps! Since my first two books were set in Ireland, most of my research revolved around 19th Century Ireland. Playing For Keeps is set in Baltimore and Philadelphia, so I had to find out what those cities might have been like in 1860. I had to research the theatre at that time, as well as some of Shakespeare's plays. I even re-wrote one of the speeches from The Scottish Play (Macbeth) to use during Lucas and Katie's “first meet.” I did extensive research into the effects of a stroke, both on the stroke survivor and those around him. That research actually helped me in my “real” life when my mother suffered a mild stroke two and a half years ago. Thankfully, she made a full recovery, but I was so grateful I knew what to do for her.

What's the best thing about being an author?
Aside from being to hold my published book in my hands and smell that marvelous “new book” smell? J I love connecting with my readers. I love hearing how they react to my characters, or a certain scene, and I love how some of them relate to my stories on a personal level. And since most of the communication is done by e-mail, or Facebook comments, I find it easier to answer them than I would in person, being a bit shy. I try to answer every comment and e-mail I receive, and I've built many on-line friendships this way.

What is the first book you remember reading?
Heidi, by Joanna Spyri. It was my favorite book as a child, and I think it sparked my life-long passion for travel. The Swiss Alps were described so well, and the characters were so vivid, that it made me want to visit one day. I wanted to be a part of the story!

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I've loved writing for as long as I can remember, ever since I learned to string a few words together into a (hopefully) coherent sentence. I remember an incident from first grade, when we were just beginning to learn how to write sentences. My teacher, who shall remain nameless, had asked us to write a sentence about Dick, Jane and their dog, Spot. I wrote a five-and-a-half-sentence paragraph, but instead of praising me for the effort, my teacher scolded me for not having finished the sentence. Talk about stifling youthful creativity! I think it was at that moment I vowed to prove how wrong she was in doing so, and I just kept writing every chance I got.

How did you come up with the title?
Well, my hero, Lucas, is an actor - a “player.” To quote Will Shakespeare, “All the world's a stage/And all the men and women merely players.” He also has - well, let's call it a commitment issue. He's spent most of his life trying to run from his problems. So it just seemed a natural.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:
I believe I was destined to be interested in history. One of my distant ancestors, Thomas Aubert, reportedly sailed up the St. Lawrence River to discover Canada some 26 years before Jacques Cartier’s 1534 voyage. Another relative was a 17thCentury “King’s Girl,” one of a group of young unmarried girls sent to New France (now the province of Quebec) as brides for the habitants (settlers) there.

My passion for reading made me long to write books like the ones I enjoyed, and I tried penning sequels to my favorite Nancy Drew mysteries. Later, fancying myself a female version of Andrew Lloyd Weber, I drafted a musical set in Paris during WWII.

A former journalist and lifelong Celtophile, I enjoyed a previous career as a reporter/editor for a small chain of community newspapers before returning to my first love, romantic fiction. My stories usually include an Irish setting, hero or heroine, and sometimes all three. My novels, In Sunshine or in Shadow and Coming Home, set in post-Famine Ireland, are available from Highland Press. Playing For Keeps, the third book in the Claddagh series, will also be published by Highland Press.

I am a member of the Romance Writers of America, Hearts Through History Romance Writers, and Celtic Hearts Romance Writers. A lifelong resident of Montreal, Canada, I still live there with my own Celtic hero and our two school-aged children.

Revenge of the Mad Scientist Book Blast Excerpt & Giveaway

Hey everyone. Today I am happy to be taking part in the Super Book Blast for Revenge of the Mad Scientist by Lara Nance. I have some info about the book, author , an excerpt and  a giveaway for you all.
Book Blurb
When Lady Arabella Trunkett’s father, the High Lord Minister of Urbannia is kidnapped, all clues point to the mysterious country of Gandiss and the world is thrown into political upheaval.

Arabella is convinced the more sinister nation of Carabarras is to blame, urged on by a mad scientist seeking revenge. So, she sets out on a perilous airship journey across a variety of exotic locales to save him, and halt the potential world war.

But airship pirates, secret assassins and slave traders aren’t her only trials. The fickle hand of fate has made the captain of the only airship available for charter, the man who left her at the altar. For eight years she's wished him dead. Now he's her only hope.

Excerpt
“Benji I have to go after him. I have to find my father. The authorities are off on a wild goose chase and I can’t get to Her Majesty to explain for three days. Time is running out. By the time I get in to see the queen and convince her of the truth, the trail will be cold.”

Benji straightened his collar and cravat. “Then we have no t, t, time to lose.”

Belle stood. “Benji, I can’t take you with me. It wouldn’t be fair to put you in danger. Besides, I’m not really your legal guardian.”

“Blast it all, Belle. I’m seventeen. In a y, y, year I won’t even need a guardian.” He crossed his arms over his chest. “Besides, you c, c, care more about me than my bloody family ever did. You’re going to need my help and I won’t let you g, g, go without me.”

“No need to curse, Benji.” She eyed the stubborn tilt of his chin and the mulish look about his eyes and knew he was right. His fountain of knowledge would be indispensable on this trip. Look how much he had already helped. It might have taken her days to figure out the meaning behind that stickpin. She also knew he would stow away or even follow her if need be. So she might as well keep him with her where she could watch out for him.

She sighed. “Very well. Pack your bags and call us a hack. We’re going to Carabarras.”

Rebel Bride Excerpt Tour & Giveaway

Hey everyone! Today i am taking part of the Excerpt tour for Rebel Bride by Morgan K. Wyatt. Be sure to check out the giveaway as part of the tour as well.

Rebel Bride
by Morgan K. Wyatt
BLURB:

Eileen Sewell sparks plenty of gossip by spiteful matrons and their horse-faced daughters that she’d find herself alone due to her picky ways. Of course, she didn’t believe them. Then again, she also didn’t expect to be a mail order bride either. It wasn’t easy snagging a husband who hadn’t heard about her willful nature. Eileen finally gave up hope of finding love, and decided to settle for whatever she’d find out west. If that wasn’t lowering enough, she’d just witnessed the first train robbery. Unfortunately, the outlaws saw her too. Enter Marshal Colt Sheppard, who excels at extracting information from reticent witnesses. His crooked smile and broad shoulders shouldn’t charm her. She’d played this game before, only she never had a worthy adversary. Talk about bad timing.

Excerpt
Eileen watched as the letter fell to the floor. Should she be excited or frightened that Montgomery Wells accepted her initial overture? She’d combed the Matrimonial News for her best prospect, and he was it. A wealthy rancher in California, with no children, and just this side of fifty wouldn’t look twice at a twenty-four year old spinster the way folks in Beaufort County did, especially since he didn’t know of her headstrong ways or her untried state. The part about being a war widow was an inspired touch guaranteed to encourage the right amount of sympathy, even a desire to protect.

She shook the envelope, hoping a sweetly worded note might tumble out, instead of the dry business-like missive. None had the first time she wiggled it, but it could be stuck inside somehow. Empty. Pretty much like her life, nothing to look forward to besides the possibility of being sent for by a man she didn’t know. Montgomery sounded like a strong name. Someone she could lean on. Lord knows she could use someone right now. The war had decimated the available male population. The wounded few who managed to struggle home often found their houses burned to the ground and their Confederate dollars worthless, not allowing them to rebuild. No good marriage prospects remained in the county, especially none who hadn’t heard of her.

Wolf Sirens Tour, Review, Excerpt & Giveaway

Hey everyone! Today I have an excerpt, review and giveaway for you all as part of the Wolf Sirens review tour.
BLURB:

When Lila unwillingly moves to the country town of Shade, she can’t imagine the life-altering events that lie in wait for her. Shade has a curfew and has always been surrounded by myths. A central feature of the town is its famous statue of Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt, whose spirit is said to protect the innocent.

Lila falls in with a group of intriguing teenagers with luminescent eyes and soon she is drawn into the shadowlands of fantasy and reality, where destiny collides.

A mysterious local girl, Cresida, warns her to stay away, but Lila is drawn to them like a moth to a flame.

Cresida knows their fatal secret and she is honour-bound to protect those who are endangered. But she underestimates Lila’s passion for the mysterious and charismatic clan of youths. Lila begins to feel a call she cannot ignore. Yet her heart is filled with vulnerable desires that begin to turn the underworld upside down, for both hunter and hunted, as she learns they have been waiting for her…

Inspired by the legend of the mythical femme fatale, Wolf Sirens is an intimate tale of unrequited and forbidden love in the underworld, a masterpiece of romance fantasy.

My Review
Lila moves to a new town with her mom and has to start over. She feels lonely and ignored. She can't help be drawn to the cool crowd of beautiful girls. They have it all she believes. She also wonders why everyone in town has to be in at night. When she gets an in to the cool crowd she is over the moon. Little does she realize she may be headed down a bad path. Even with a warning from a girl named Cresida she still wants to be part of the crowd. Will she figure things out or is it to late.

I like Lila's character. You can see where she is coming from. Her parents are not together, she has to move and no one pays her any attention. I can see where being a part of the cool crowd would have it's appeal even when people warn you to stay away. I liked watching her come out her shell. The only part i didn't like about her is when she became a lovesick fool. But hey I remember being a teen and in love I can totally see it. The other characters are just as intriguing and they draw you in as you try to see just what is making them tick.

The author does a wonderful job putting her own spin in mythology. Yes there is a lot of werewolf books out but these one will have no problem standing out on it's own. The way it is written is wonderful and seems different. I really like the authors way of writing. The plot has a twist to it that does leave you wanting more. the only reason this gets 4 instead of 5 stars is it does slow down a few times. I guess you could say it gives you a minute to catch your breath. If you think you have read all the same old books about werewolves pick this one up. I am sure it will change your mind.

Excerpt
I felt like I was part of him, like our flesh had been separated, like his blood was mine and now we were united. I wanted to know everything. I considered it inevitable now that I would become one of them. There was no way I could leave him or not be part of his world; I would die first and the more of him I had the more I wanted. It was like I had been living in a grey tunnel and all of a sudden every colour imaginable was revealed to me and I could look up and see all around me. As though there were a million directions to go, but all I wanted to do was walk towards him. I realized what it was to be alive and to be happy. To be in love and to struggle for each and every wonderfully excruciating breath of life, just to stare into his vivid sapphire eyes.

Under Her Spell

Hey everyone! Today I am taking part of the Super Book Blast for Under Her Spell by Eliza Daly. I have an excerpt and Giveaway for you all as well.

Under Her Spell
by Eliza Daly
BLURB:

When a series of failed relationships and business ventures have Monica Jackson doubting her self-worth, she turns to spell casting to attract positive energy and the opportunities needed to achieve her goals. But can Monica’s belief in spells restore her belief in herself?

Monica creates a spell to find her soul mate, and one to ensure the success of her new romantic event planning company, Enhance Your Romance. Monica is confident she has found her niche until divorce lawyer Reed Walker opens a practice next door to her office. The anti-marriage slogan plastered on his office window, and his down-on-love clients, quickly prove detrimental to Monica’s business. When his arrival appears to trigger a string of bad luck, Monica fears one of her spells sent negative energy into the universe and it has returned to her threefold. Although Reed is beyond sexy, and she admires his self-confidence, she’ll do whatever it takes to get the universe back on her side, and Reed out of her life. No way is she losing another business.

Reed finds himself attracted to Monica’s beauty and her optimism. His job and his parents’ divorce have made him a pessimist, especially when it comes to love. However, he soon finds that Monica’s pro-love attitude is rubbing off on him, causing him to lose his edge. If Reed doesn’t distance himself from Monica, he’ll likely destroy his reputation as a pit bull divorce lawyer.

Can Monica and Reed look past what they might be losing to realize the love they have found?

Excerpt
Monica turned and her gaze landed on a sign in the window.

Marriage isn’t a word, it’s a sentence. I’ll set you free.

She glanced up at the sign over the door. Reed Walker: Family Law.

Focusing on Chico’s lunch specials when she’d driven up, she’d failed to notice the new signs. “A divorce lawyer?” she muttered in disbelief. Her gaze darted over to the guy. “You’re a divorce lawyer? I thought you were a client.” Being attracted to a divorce lawyer was much worse than a client. Suddenly his eyes didn’t seem as blue and his arms looked wimpy. No way was he Italian. Or her soul mate. And what kind of straight guy wore lavender!

“A client?” He laughed as if that was the most ridiculous thing he’d ever heard. “Ah no, I just started moving in and stopped by to introduce myself.”

“You have to take down that sign.” Monica pointed at his window.

“It’s my company motto. Helps attract business.”

“Maybe for you.”

He arched an amused brow. “That’s the idea.”

“You can’t promote divorce.” She clutched his suit jacket, crumpling it in her hand.

“I’m not promoting it. It’s a fact of life. I don’t have any control over the average marriage lasting seven years, or that one in every two ends in divorce.”

Monica’s gaze skittered around frantically as she searched for a response that didn’t involve whipping the socket wrench through his window and mauling the sign to shreds. She spied a black Mercedes parked up the street. The license plate read No Mer-ce.

“Is that your car?” she demanded, pointing at the Mercedes.

“What are you so worried about? Doesn’t bother me being next door to a business that promotes romance and marriage.”

My Review
Monica runs a business that thrives on romance. She has had many business but none that ever pan out. She is determined to make this one last. She even cast a few spells to help her out. She also cast a spell hoping to meet mister right. When divorce lawyer Reed Walker moves in next door she thought her spell had come true until she sees what kind of work he does. He doesn't believe in love and doesn't believe in marriage. The sparks still fly between the two and they may have to change the way they think about life.

Monica is a wonderful character. She believes in love and tries to do what is right even when it may backfire on her. I easily fell into her head and could see where she was coming from. Reed is the hotty that would turn any girls head. At times he seems like a jerk but as you get to see more of what he went through as a child you understand him. I couldn't help but to cheer these two on and hope they could get past their problems and get together. Another character I really enjoyed is Hope. She is Monica's cousin with a horrible husband. I love the lengths she goes to to get even with this jerk. I won't spoil anything but she is a woman after my own heart.

I picked this up and read it in one sitting. It is an easy read that will pull you in as if by magic. It is very well written with a cute plot that is light and fun. You get several funny parts that make it so much better. You actually believe the chemistry between the two main characters. I am not a huge fan of old movies or songs but the author includes some in this book that fit it perfect. Recommend to anyone looking for a wonderful, witty love story with a side of steamy threw in.

Love Beyond The Curve Tour, Excerpt & Giveaway

Hey everyone! I have an excerpt and a giveaway for you as part of the Excerpt Tour for Love Beyond the Curve by Kate Patrick. Here is the cover and blurb first.
Love Beyond the Curve
by Kate Patrick
BLURB:

Charlotte is shocked to find her new landlord, Reed Jackson, is tall, dark, and gorgeous. The two become fast friends, enjoying times spent together, more than times apart. Charlotte can’t believe that Reed finds her curvaceous figure incredibly sexy. Can Reed convince her he wants to be more than just “friends with benefits”?

Will Charlotte and Reed find… Love Beyond the Curve?

Excerpt
“Who is it?” Charlotte asked without opening the door.
“Reed Jackson, your landlord.  I hate to bother you so early, but I am in a bit of a jam, and was hoping you could help me out,” he said through the door.
Charlotte ran her hands over her hair to try to smooth it down.  It was in a ponytail, and rather messy at that.  She was wearing black Capri length leggings with a pink tank top and no bra.  Her habit of completely “unlatching” when she got home was biting her in the ass right now.  She was barefoot with hot pink toenails.  Not a bit of make-up was on her face, since she had showered earlier.  In other words, she looked like a train wreck, but what did it matter?  She wished she looked more presentable for her initial meeting of the landlord, but with him being an old man, why should she care?
With that final thought, she opened the door and instantly thought to herself, “Oh shit!  I should have cared!”  There in front of her stood a prime example of “tall, dark, and handsome”, with a pair of piercing ice blue eyes to go with it.  He was wearing faded, worn jeans, and a light blue t-shirt straining against a wide, muscular chest and bulging biceps.  Somebody should have warned her.  She closed her eyes for an instant, gathering her thoughts and opened the door wider, saying, “Please come on in. How can I help you?”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Kate Patrick grew up in the South. She can’t recall a time in her life when she didn’t love to read. She remembers going to the library as a child where she devoured biographies and Nancy Drew mysteries. Her love of reading has continued into adulthood, but it is hot romance that she loves to write! While in high school and college, she and her sister began to write romantic stories about girls that met their dream guys who fell instantly in love with them. Even these early manuscripts were spicy enough that the need to “hide” these notebooks was a high priority when leaving the house!

Writing took a backseat to a teaching career, marriage, and motherhood, though books were constant companions. Love stories became a favorite, and began to take the place of mysteries more and more. About three years ago, the idea of writing was rekindled. Now, you can find her late at night typing away by the blue glow of her laptop screen.

She and her husband live on the Gulf Coast with their son and three quirky Pomeranians. When not writing or reading, Kate loves to sing, dance, and watch romantic movies, side-splitting comedies, and crime dramas. Spending time connecting with family and friends is an important priority for her as well.

Seven Point Eight:

'The Truth Will Set You Free'

In the second instalment of the Seven Point Eight series, the legacy of the OOBE project weighs heavily on the conscience of Dr Paul Eldridge. Tahra Mamoun needs to muster all her courage and venture back into the alternate dimensions of reality. Through a series of challenging, surreal and frightening experiences, she comes to comprehend the destructive power she can yield and must face her own demons in the process.

Paul continues his quest to understand the ancient knowledge of the cosmos, while dark forces seek to hijack his research to further a secret agenda. With their lives in jeopardy, Paul and Tahra confront their enemies against an international backdrop featuring the pyramids of Giza and the peaks of Switzerland.

Meanwhile, Sam and Ava endeavour to uncover their past, even though it may irrevocably change their lives.

In a tale of courage and tragedy, love and betrayal, their lives are interwoven around the demons of one man, Max Richardson, who'll stop at nothing to achieve his objectives.

Written in the style of a TV series, Seven Point Eight draws together quantum physics, psychic powers, alternate dimensions, time travel, past lives, ancient wisdom and conspiracy in a soap opera for the soul.

It’s the ideal read for lovers of sci-fi, contemporary fantasy, paranormal, metaphysics, ‘Lost’, ‘Fringe’, ‘Touch’, and Dan Brown books.

Excerpt
Like the other snipers, he watched the scene below the ridge unfold. A picturesque cottage nestled between two barns and surveyed an expanse of fields, many already harvested. Its courtyard entertained a host of chickens pecking at random, while a goat chewed nonchalantly, tethered to a gate post. Adjacent to the house, rows of proud runner beans entwined around canes, cabbages sat stoutly and carrots soaked up the rays of impending autumn. A woman tended to these vegetables, appearing relaxed in her surroundings while a little girl exited the cottage, carrying a basket of apples. She had blonde, curly hair and wore a corduroy pinafore, with a roll neck knit underneath and tights to cover her legs. The sight of his rifle homed in on the girl.

Outside the cottage, the woman watered her vegetable plot, admiring their progress and inspecting for pests. A chocolate brown Labrador ran through the open door and joined the little girl, wagging his tail, she responded by stroking his head. Her mother acknowledged the sweetness of the scene with a smile. The radio blared out from the kitchen, playing T-Rex’s ‘Get It On’ and the mother moved her body in a surreptitious dance, singing along under her breath.

“I’m going to feed the horsies,” the little girl said.

“That’s okay, sweetheart, don’t forget to approach them carefully from the front.”

She eyed her daughter discreetly as the little girl opened the gate to the first field. The horses were grazing in the far corner and as she made her way over to them, the dog followed behind her at her heels. She considered her mother’s instructions as she approached, cautious of startling them, as she didn’t want to receive a hefty kick. When she reached them, she stroked their noses and they each received an apple, taking them greedily. All the time, her mother remained aware of her daughter’s movements as she picked runner beans, while the dog ran around her in circles. Then unexpectedly, it barked, causing the mother to pause.

Something upset the horses and the little girl touched the top of her arm, finding a dart stuck in her skin. She screamed. Whatever it was, it made her disorientated; everything started to spin and a moment later, she collapsed to the ground. The dog became frantic, barking and jumping around at the invisible enemy.

Hearing the scream, her mother froze. A wave of nausea gripped her stomach as she became confronted with every parent’s worst nightmare…a nightmare from the past that had returned to haunt her. Instinctively, she vaulted the gate and spurred by panic, she ran towards her daughter, hoping to find her breathing. As she sprinted across the damp grass, she became aware of a sharp pain in her neck, as if a mosquito had just bitten her. However, she ignored it and knelt by her daughter, her priority.

“Come on, come on,” she whispered in desperation, “wake up!”

This couldn’t be happening. The stalkers had quit, tired of the relentless chase, that cat and mouse where the rodent had always been left unscathed, while the predator had cursed his luck and licked his wounds again and again. Her family had just become settled, laid new plans, looked to a future free from fear, but that was just a mere fantasy now.

“Please wake up!”

She laid her head on her daughter’s chest, relieved to discover she was still breathing, but her little girl didn’t regain consciousness. Another sting, this time in her upper arm, reminded her of the danger that lurked.

Not again, please, no more running, no more fighting...

Closing her eyes, she understood what she needed to do, but nothing happened. This couldn’t be. She sensed an adjustment in her awareness, like someone had changed the channel on TV without asking her. Her grasp of the everyday world began to blur around the edges, it felt distant, a mere projection on an antique screen. Something was wrong, the game had changed.

Excerpt
Pockets of swirling magic dust rose from the surface of the pink and violet water as it came into contact with the white beam that formed the perimeter of all Elenchera. The beam was not a perfect circle around the world, or a straight line, but led a jagged and uneven course, creating four distinct edges from four heavily defined promontories.

The west edge of Elenchera had been known to the earliest settlers in Gremilda – the magic dust that rose from the surrounding ocean gave the Gremildans the silver streaks in their hair and their glistening blue eyes – but one had to stand right by the edge to be truly close to magic.

A small island of rock overlooked the west edge, its surface blemished only by the presence of eight beautifully carved statues that stood on the outskirts of the island. Each one depicted a Gremildan of great distinction. The oldest was of a pioneer named Victor who had led the first successful crossing of the Raintops Mountains, opening the route into West Gremilda in the Second Shard. The most recent was of Moravia, a brilliant naval commander who had kept the island safe from invasion in the Ninth Shard.

The island by the west edge had long been considered sacred ground to the Gremildans. Only the Protectors and scientists were ever permitted to make the short crossing across the ocean to step foot on the island. The code had been broken by successful rebellions in the past but none more desecrating than the arrival of the Eligantian colonists. Many of the colonists had made the journey to the island but despite relentless pressure and persecution they had failed to yield the secrets of how to cast magic.

AUTHOR INFORMATION:
David Brown could be considered a fantasy fanatic, especially since he has spent the last 10 years developing a 47,000-year history for his fictional world of Elenchera. When converting his obsession into literary form, David commits himself to a rigorous writing and editing process before his work can meet his approval. Combined with the critical eye of his wife and a BA Hons in History and English, David's dedication leads him to his goal of inspiring readers through heartfelt stories and characters.
Although David is inspired primarily by fantasy fiction, he also finds his muse in the form of anime, world cinema, history, and biographies. His own books, Fezariu's Epiphany and A World Apart, and the in-progress Ansel's Remorse and The Stars Beneath the Parapets combine aspects from worlds both old and new into compelling tales of a world not soon forgotten. David himself certainly does not lack a spirit of adventure; in fact, he left his job in 2007 in order to spend a month travelling. Second only to meeting and marrying his wife, David counts this as one of the most amazing experiences of his life.

Allusive Aftershock Tour- Interview, Excerpt & Giveaway

Title: Allusive Aftershock
By: Susan Griscom
Genre: Young Adult Romance
Published by Amber Glow Books
Release date: December 18, 2012

Blurb:
What happens when a major earthquake changes life as you know it and the boy you thought you hated ends up saving you? Three times!

Courtland Reese is the guy everyone hates and makes fun of because … well, he is weird. He communicates with animals. Strange or interesting, seventeen-year-old Adela Castielle can’t quite figure out, but when he saves her from being trampled by her own horse, she begins to understand him a little better and wants to learn more about him.

But, Max--her best friend/dream guy/someday-to-be-her-husband-only-he-doesn’t-know-it-yet--hates Courtland with a passion. Adela wants to know why, except neither boy is talking.

When Max leaves her stranded in his parents' wine cave with his worst enemy, Courtland, after what the experts are calling a “megathrust” earthquake, Adela starts to question her loyalty to Max as steamy kisses in a dark damp cellar only fuel her emotions with more conflict.

But does she really have time to worry about that when fire, destruction and mayhem surround her?
Excerpt

With no electricity, I could barely make out the two figures standing by the door to the cellar. If not for the half moon, I would not have been able to see them at all. I stepped up to them and realized they were staring up at the sky and my eyes naturally followed their gaze. I had never seen such an awesome sight. Without any city lights for miles and miles, the stars in the sky were unusually bright and plentiful. A truly beautiful sight.
“Wow,” I whispered, standing between Max and Court. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Court’s focus change and he stared down at me. There was something strange about the way his eyes bored into me, as if he could see into my soul. I waited for him to look away but he held his gaze on me while I pretended to marvel at the sky. I’d never seen him stare at me that way before and I got nervous. My fingers fidgeted with each other and I clamped two of them in my other hand to steady them. If I hadn’t known better, I never would have guessed in a million years he had injuries. His eyes stayed fixed on me with an intense tenderness I had never seen from a boy before. Maybe Courtland Reese wasn’t so bad after all. Standing between the two of them in all their glorious hotness had my stomach doing flip-flops. I knew it was wrong to think these things under the circumstances, but maybe my mind just needed the distraction … or confusion. I loved Max, but I was beginning to like Courtland too. Man, I was in so much trouble.

Interview
Allusive Aftershock interview questions
Thank you so much for having me on your blog today, Pam. I have been looking forward to this for a while.

Tell me about your book. How did you come up with that (story, angle, idea)?

The outline for Allusive Aftershock was originally written as a challenge from a writing group I once belonged to. The challenge was to write an outline for NaNoWriMo for the year 2010. We didn’t necessarily need to sign up for NaNoWriMo and actually write the novel, but I decided to go for it. At first, the story was to be a based on a full blown world catastrophic event, but then later decided to tone it down to be more realistic.

What kind of research did you do for this book?
Even though I’ve been in several earthquakes, since I live in California, I still did a ton of research on earthquakes, fires, horses and also wine cellars and wine barrel tasting. The very first scene in the book is actually based on an experience I had when I was seventeen. Like Adela, I, too ran to my mom’s bed and watched the water slosh around in the pool while the cement ripple in waves around it. It was my very first earthquake and I had no clue what was happening. It did feel as if we were being bombed, which I also had no clue how that felt and never want to know.

What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview? How would you answer that question?
This is a really hard question to answer. I’ve been asked so many over the years I don’t know if I could think of one that hadn’t already been asked. But I can tell you my favorite question. That is, who would I pick to play my characters if my book was ever made into a movie. I love this question, because it gives readers some idea of what was going through my head while I was writing. Descriptions are great and as a writer I would hope readers are able to form a picture in their head, but still sometimes a little visualization helps too because everyone sees things differently in their mind. It is difficult for me though with Allusive Aftershock because in the cover I used Pepe Toth and Sztella Tziotziosz, which by the way, I had designed by Robin Ludwig Designs July 2012. I picked that pose because I needed a picture of a guy carrying a girl and that particular pose had not, at the time, been used yet. So, yes, although they are not actors, I would have to go with someone similar to them and sorry to say, I haven’t found any, yet. Maybe Thomas Dekker.

Thomas has that bad boy look and a soft gentle side that makes Courtland so special. And those eyes, you could just drown in them. LOL I don’t know about a female to play Adela. I tend to lean toward someone with long dark hair, maybe someone like Victoria Justice.

However, Max is easy. Alex Pettyfer with blond hair would be perfect. Alex has the ability to pull off that spoiled selfish side of Max.

What is the hardest part of writing for you?
All of it. LOL. Creating the storyline is always the hardest. I mean, I have a ton of ideas floating around in my head, but putting them down in a story takes plotting and then there is flow and making things sound believable. Editing is easy and hard. It easy because the story is there, the words are there, but then when the editor says, I think you should move this, or change this or this doesn’t work, or this is a repeat or maybe find a different way to say this, then you need to rethink and try to make it all fit and work. Writing a book takes time and patience.

What makes your book different from others in this genre?
Allusive Aftershock is a book about a major megathrust (9.1) earthquake with many very powerful aftershocks. There are friendships being tested and gained, loss and, yes, there is death and tragedy, but there is also love. There are many YA novels revolving around catastrophes, dystopian worlds and fantasies, science fiction, zombies, fairies, vampires, etc., but I don’t know of many young adult books that revolve around true life natural disasters and how in the midst of it all they manage to survive and love and at times, even hate.

Which one of your characters is most like you?
I guess I would have to pick Adela since she is the only female. Well main female. And we did go through the same earthquake experience.

What do you do when you’re not writing?
I read, write reviews and try to promote my books. LOL I also design book covers. I did not design Allusive Aftershock’s front cover, though I did design the back and a couple of my other covers.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

No. I wrote it the way it should be. In fact, the ending was different and much more brief, but after many hours of soul searching, I changed it and hopefully made it better.

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
I learned about horses. I also learned a little about wine barrel tasting and wine caves. I also learned that no matter how bad things get, you need to get up and try and try and try. Because everything that Adela, Court and even Max had to overcome, they never quit trying.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
Never give up. Get beta readers and always have your work edited by a professional editor. Seek out other authors because they are full of information. I am constantly seeking out my authors friends for advice and recommendations.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I hope you like Allusive Aftershock. I loved writing about Courtland’s and Adela’s relationship and they way they fell in love. I still get goose bumps when I think about it. If you are over eighteen, please check out my other two books from the Whisper Cape Series, Whisper Cape and Reflections, book 2.

What was the first book you remember reading?
The Littlest Witch.

Thank you for the fantastic interview. I had a great time.

A note from Susan:

I daydream often and sometimes my daydreams interrupt my daydreams. So I write to remember them. If I didn't write, I think my mind would explode from an overload of fantasy and weirdness. To the annoyance of my friends and family, my characters sometimes become a part of my world. During my childhood, I would frequently get in trouble in school for daydreaming. Eventually, my vivid imagination paid off and I had the privilege of writing and co-directing my sixth-grade class play—a dreadful disaster, though not from my writing, of course, I must blame it on the acting.

I love writing about characters living in small quaint towns and tend to lean toward the unusual and spooky.

My paranormal playing field delves into a different milieu, abandoning vampires and werewolves, but not discounting them. Someday I might like to write a novel about vamps and those furry creatures. But for now I like the bizarre mixed with romance. A strong hero or heroine confronted with extraordinary forces of nature, powers and capabilities gets my blood running hot.
