“I have never been useless in my life…”
Rescued from a life of servitude by the boy she loves, Susanna Marsh escapes across two centuries, only to be plunged into a world she’s ill-prepared to face. Unable to work or go to school, Susanna finds herself dependent on others to survive.

Immersed in the fun and demands of his senior year of high school, Mark Lewis longs to share his world with the girl who’s captured his heart. But first he must tackle government bureaucracy to prove Susanna’s identity.

Overwhelmed by her new home, Susanna seeks refuge in history and in news of the people she left behind. But when she learns that danger stalks her sister, Susanna must weigh whether to risk her own future in order to save Phoebe’s happiness.

No Apology From Me
Shailene Woodley is starring in two big films this year: Divergent and The Fault In Our Stars. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to see either because [spoiler alert] I like stories/series to have happy endings.

I read a blog post once where the blogger compared her taste in novels to her taste in foods. Some things she liked. Some things she didn’t. If she skipped a book, it wasn’t a commentary on the quality of the work. It was just a personal choice.

That makes a lot of sense to me. I’m allergic to chocolate, and cilantro turns me into a snarling crazy woman. I’m sure they’re delicious; they’re just not for me. I’ll stick with vanilla.

When Allegiant (the 3rd book in the Divergent series) released, there were a lot of upset fans. Their surprise reportedly turned nasty. The author, Veronica Roth, was verbally abused for the choices she made in that book.

I have three things to say about the controversy that followed.

1) Personal attacks against an author are wrong. Always. It’s okay to hate the book, but don’t let those feelings splatter on the writer. If buyers don’t like a product, they just shouldn't buy it.

2) Personal attacks against other readers with differing opinions are wrong too. When I’m reading a book, the only opinion that matters is mine. I can’t imagine getting mad enough over a disagreement on a book to tweet threats or insults.

Which leads to my last point…

3) If I know in advance that a book will end sadly, I’m not likely to read it. If you want to, fine. But don’t call me stupid, unsophisticated, immature, or any of the other crazy things that have been said about people who like happy endings.

Because I like to read happy endings, I like to write them too. I want my characters to win. I want them to work hard at a worthy goal and find a measure of success. There may be sadness and suffering along the way, but ultimately I want justice to be served and love to prevail.

I write stories with happy or hopeful or satisfying endings, and I’m not apologizing for that.

  1. I 100% stand by your post! Omg! I'm so tired of the author and the reader bashing over something as silly as an OPINION! I feel like I've gone back to high school with the cliques and the drama. What works for one won't for the other and no one should get so heated over it. Well said. BTW, your book sounds fantabulous and on my TBR pile it goes!
